An email and calendar client, also called Personal Information Manager (PIM), has been the one of the most desired features for StarOffice for quite a while. StarOffice 9 now fills this gap with Mozilla Thunderbird and Lightning. StarOffice developers contributed heavily to Mozilla Lightning in order to turn it into an enterprise-class calendar client.
In addition, the Web 2.0 world is becoming more and more important. In order to simplify the collaboration and integration with popular web services, StarOffice 9 offers two powerful extensions, the *Sun Wiki Publisher* and the *Sun Weblog Publisher*. With these extensions, creating wiki pages and blog entries becomes a simple task.
StarOffice also simplifies the joint creation and edition of spreadsheet files via a new workbook sharing feature. Calc comes with a new Solver component for solving optimization problems and offers a much improved chart component with many new formatting options. Presenters will benefit from the new table feature as well as two new extensions: the *Sun Presentation Minimizer* which compresses presentation document files and the *Sun Presenter Console* which allows viewing the speaker notes and the next slides while presenting.
Finally, Base can be extended with the powerful *Sun Report Builder*. As a consequence, users will feel much more productive with StarOffice 9.

Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites. For example, the collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia is one of the best known wikis. The Sun Wiki Publisher makes creating new wiki pages on MediaWiki servers an easy task. It allows users to create and edit MediaWiki articles within StarOffice Writer and without learning the syntax of the MediaWiki markup language.

Many StarOffice 8 customers asked for an email and calendaring client. Based on these frequent requests StarOffice engineering decided to join and take leadership in the Mozilla Lightning open source community. Mozilla Lightning is a Mozilla Thunderbird Calendaring Add-on which extends the Mozilla Thunderbird email client with calendering functionality.
The *Mozilla Thunderbird* email client is one of the most popular email clients on the market, it is available on Windows, Mac, Linux and Solaris. An account wizard helps you setup Thunderbird for your IMAP, POP3, or GMail server account, even News and RSS-Feed servers are supported.
A powerful spam and phishing filter protects you from email scams and cuts out the junk emails automatically. Thunderbird is a full featured and powerful email client.

The Calendering Add-On *Lightning* integrates perfectly in the Thunderbird email client and manages your appointments and to-dos either on a local or a server-based calendar. This first release supports Sun Java System Calendar server and the Google Calendar only, but due to open architecture we are expect support for other calendar servers soon.
Similar to other email/calendar clients, the standard email view is separated into three areas:
# on the task pane on the left, the email and newsgroups folders,
# in the center, the email subjects and bodies, and
# on the right, a summary view of the appointments for today and tomorrow and the to-dos.
There are two additional views available for better overview of the appointments and todos
Scheduling meetings is now much easier as the PIM solution provides quickly, ian overview ofthe schedules of various team members, and once a meeting time and day has been selected, the invitation dialog comes up and using he Sun Java Calendar, he attendees are automatically invited, with all the relevant meeting information. And no separate invitation emails for attendees are required.
The Calendar view provides the useful feature to display the calendars from colleagues and the search pane makes it easy to find appointments and to-dos. You can also import and export Outlook and iCalendar files for synchronizing calendars with users who do not use the Sun Java Calendar Server or Google Calendars

h2. Spreadsheet Collaboration Through Workbook Sharing
This new feature allows collaborating on spreadsheets with multiple users. By sharing a spreadsheet, other users can easily add their data to the spreadsheet. The spreadsheet owner can then easily integrate the new data with a few clicks. The new collaboration feature also helps avoid editing conflicts.

StarOffice 9 supports now the secure version of the the WebDAV protocol. WebDav is a standardized HTTP-based protocol for document access over the web. StarOffice 9 is able to read the document directory and can also load and save documents from WebDAV servers.
