h2. The Challenges

Sun Microsystems and Cisco want to demonstrate, with support of Belgacom and G10, that 40% overall data-center energy savings can be realized by introducing the concept of Full Free Air Cooling in combination with ETSI compliant servers, storage and switches.

h2. Drivers

* Ever growing electricity consumption in data-centers by IT-equipment and related cooling.
* Ever increasing price of electricity (kWh price 2007: \+30%)
* The use of Full Free Air Cooling and ETSI Compliant equipment is proposed to be included in the European Code of Conduct for Data-Centers.
* Corporate Social Responsibility programs across the industry focus on CO{_}2_ reduction

h2. Description of the Proof of Concept

The concept is based on the experience of several European Telecom Operators  (eg Swisscom, BT, Belgacom) using Full Free Air cooling to substantially reduce the energy consumption in the Telecom Network.

A small scale data-center has been designed by Belgacom/Swisscom and Sun Microsystems, and is constructed at the Sun Solution Center in Linlithgow (Scotland).
It is running ETSI compliant Sun servers and storage, and Cisco networking devices, mounted in 2 racks. All systems are running 24 hrs. Temperature and humidity are constantly monitored and recorded by G10 Data Center Solution.
The concept can be applied to any data-center load density.

The result of the proof of concept is spectacular : the average PUE is 1.06
ETSI boundaries are respected with a large margin.

h2. Conclusion

* Applying Full Free Air Cooling in the data-center is realistic \!
* Compared to an industry average PUE of 2, the potential overall data-center energy saving is 40%
