h3. What Are Groups and Permissions
Groups are collections of wiki users with defined levels of access, privileges, and entitlement. Permissions are a set of rules that determine actions available to users and groups, such as who may access and contribute to your wiki. Use groups and permissions to manage activity for your wiki space.
h3. Global Groups
(or Default Groups)
New users are automatically added to one or more of the following groups based on their status (for example, Sun employees, anonymous users, Sun Online account holders):
| *Group* | *Description* |
| confluence-admins | a small number of people with site-wide admin permissions |
| sun-employees | employees + interns |
| sun-users | sun-employees + contractors, partners, and anyone else with the Sun Java badge |
| sun-partners | sun partners\\ |
| wiki-users | sun-users + Sun Online Account holders |
| anonymous | all the unauthenticated users |
| space-admin-exceptions | special group for users that are not Sun employees but were given exemption to become space admins (usually used for Sun contractors) |
h3. Space Groups
(or Space Admin Defined Custom Groups)
Space administrators can create a group for their individual space to set the access permissions so only members of the group may access the wiki space (restricted wiki). To create a local group
# Click on Browse (in the top menu)
# Click on Manage Users/Groups.
# Define the group name in the "Add Group" field. Your group name will automatically be pre-pended with the name of your wiki space, followed by two dashes. Example: mywikispace--mygroup.
# In the optional "With Users" field you can define usernames of user that should be enrolled into this group.
# Click Submit to save your changes
# Once saved, click on the newly created group name in the left panel to add users in the "Add User(s) field, then click submit.
# To delete a group, on the Manage Users/Groups page, click on the group name in the side panel, then click "Delete group <group name>"
# If you copy your space using the copy space plugin (which will change the name of a space) you'll need to create new groups for it as your previous groups won't appear in the "Manage User/Groups" tab. Additionally you'll also have to manually migrate all the user memberships to the new group(s). If the space copy is just a snapshot, then you can continue using the master space for user management and use the space groups from the master space to control access in the snapshots.
{note}Please note that only users that logged in to wikis.sun.com at least once will be found via the user search. Users that have a Sun Online Account but haven't used wikis in the past won't be found via search until they log in to wikis.{note}
