Purpose
Purpose of the Solaris advantage and applications is to take OpenSolaris core innovations to the global audience and also to provide unique and competitive value adds to OpenSolaris.
Value proposition
What we do should go beyond just internationalization and localization of major Solaris components. We will provide well tested/integrated components for OpenSolaris which's a joy to use out of the box by global audience.
Time Frame
Within 2 releases after OpenSolaris 2009.06 release. (2010.02 and 2010.08 ?)
Goals
Define and execute projects/processes to
SAA1. Take OpenSolaris core innovations to global audience
We will identify the OpenSolaris core innovations and will work with those communities as a community member to make those fully internationalized for global audience. We will work as an influencial community member to align their key design decisions to take G11N into account
SAA2. Localization of OpenSolaris key componets
We will identfy OpenSolaris key components and will make sure that they are localized in our core target markets. Documentation/online help and localizing the training will also come under this.
For components which come from other communities, basically we will just leverage available translations from each community.
SAA3. Provide unique value adds to OpenSolaris
Internationalization and localization community group will provide new innovative value adds which will distinguish our products from competition
SAA4. Incorporate compelling global FOSS offerings to OpenSolaris
We will look out for competitive global infrastructure components/products developed in other OpenSource communities and will work to bring those innovations into OpenSolaris
Projects
Take OpenSolaris core innovations to global audience.
- *G11N IPS tags* (framework1) - Consolidate l10n package(s) into corresponding base package, but mark each l10n file using "facet" type of tags.
- *G11N install (I18n Service) library* (framework2) - Separate l10n sensitive portions from install related libraries and g11n provides the functionality as a library
- *Install Language support in Auto Install profile* (utilizing framework1&2) - Enable to specify on which languages of l10n user wants, in Auto Install profile.
- *Install Language support in IPS GUI and CLI* (utilizing framework1&2) - Make IPS GUI/CLI to use g11n IPS tag support.
- *Live CD session* - better language selection via GRUB menu (utilizing framework2) - Use enhanced "pre-session" UI, e.g. upgraded GRUB, for more efficient session language selection than current raw-console one.
