h1. Overview of TheAquarium Channel
TheAquarium Channel broadcasts via uStream.TV. The client is Flash-based and it is fairly easy to set up; broadcasting is a bit more complicated but we have arranged the situation so invited presenters have a relatively simple setup (while the actual broadcaster is quite more complex).
TheAquarium Channel is a regular (weekly + specials) online show that covers different topics of interest to the larger GlassFish community. We currently broadcast via uStream.TV; the channel is [TheAquarium|http://www.ustream.tv/channel/theaquarium]. We record the shows and make them available later for replays.

h3. Instructions for Audience
The _audience_ uses a browser and relies on Flash-based client that is very easy to use. We have arranged the broadcasting so the _presenters_ have a relatively simple setup. The _broadcaster_ arrangement is relatively complicated.

Point your browser to [http://www.ustream.tv/channel/theaquarium]; you will need a (not sure how recent) Flash plugin. This will provide you with *+video+* (image of presenter + slides + anything else) and *+audio+* (unless you want to use the concall # instead). This also gives you a *+chat+*.
Instructions follow:

uStream allows for anonymous participation in chats but also permits the broadcaster to disable that. You are +encouraged+ to either login into uStream before participating or to acquire a nickname during the chat - you can do this by typing "/nick mynickname" to your chat prompt (without the quotes).

You can get audio either from uStream, or through the conference call (concall). The concall is free inside the US but is caller-paid outside the US. We believe we have fixed the early audio-quality problems in the uStream audio, so hopefully uStream will be the preferred mechanisms. Note that there is a 3-5 second delay in the ustream broadcast while the concall has very little delay. This means the uStream audio is synchronized with the video feed, but the concall audio is ahead of the video.

If you are using the phone concall, you should *+mute+*.

h3. Instructions for Presenters

The general picture is: the broadcaster takes audio and video from local and remote sources and broadcasts it to the audience. The presenter delivers some of the content ahead and some real time, using a combination of video point-to-point to the broadcaster and audio concall.

The presenters will need a skype-capable setup (mike, webcam, headphones) and access to the audio concall. Beware of audio feedback loops; if you want to hear yourself you will want headphones.

h5. Preparations Ahead of Broadcast

* Start by checking your audience setup works (Flash plugin, etc)
* Provide your skype id to the broadcaster
* Send your slides in PDF format to the broadcaster
* Send any other material (screencasts?) to the broadcaster
* Check your setup with the broadcaster - don't skip this, it won't work!

h5. During Broadcast

* Start Skype session with broadcaster; that will provide your *+video+*
* (Optional) Open your browser on uStream.tv. You need this is you want to see the chat activity. If you want to participate in the chat Q&A (which is a bit tricky as you are talking at the same time), we request you to not be anonymous (either login into uStream, or acquire a nickname, see above).
* Call into concall; that will provide your *+audio+*.
* (Optional) track the chat Q&A, but beware of split brains.
* You can use the skype chat (which you have with your broadcaster, see above) to talk with him/her.

The video will get to the broadcaster from a point-to-point skype call. The audio comes from a VoIP into the concall. The broadcaster takes the skype image, +adds+ with slides and optional screencasts and then +adds+ the audio and +broadcasts+ via uStream.TV.

Notes to integrate

Note that this whole thing is fairly informal and it is quite OK to cancel a presentation if we need to. I'd usually would have reminded you earlier, but the last week+ has been fairly hectic and I forgot.

The general model is that...

I (eduardo) broadcast video+audio using uStream.tv. The speakers give me content ahead (slides, screencasts, etc), and, during the presentation, they just need to call into a concall number. I pull the audio from there via a softphone. I compose the video using a softcamera.

This arrangement is fairly robust, which is good in a "live" broadcast situation with multiple moving parts.

* You get me the slides ahead in PDF (and ODP). I need some time to upload the content to differnet places (slideshare.net, slx, mediacast) so I need the slides "early". For tomorrow, I can take them as late as 9:30amPT on Thu.

* Screencasts in quicktime, FLV, MP4. No Shockwave, please.

* During the presentation, I turn the "slides"; just say "next" and go on (there is a lag, but don't worry about that, the audio and video streams are synchronized).

* During the presentation, the audience will connect through their browser (flash client). They participate via the associated chat room. Often there are side conversations ongoing during the presentation, with presenters / extra members answering questions as they appear.

* During the presentation, the speakers present via the concall; they can also talk talk to each other that way. Anything in that cncall is broadcasted. Non-speakers can use the concall, but should mute (*6).

* We record the presentation and then make it available in different formats.
