Discovering Gear and Installing Agents

This procedure describes a simple example of gear discovery and xVM Ops Center agent installation. This example focuses on running a limited discovery search, and subsequently installing a Sun xVM Ops Center agent onto a single discovered system. Sun xVM Ops Center is capable of much broader gear discovery searches than the one described here, as well as broader installation of Sun xVM Ops Center agents. This procedure assumes that an as-yet undiscovered system, with an installed Solaris operating system instance, is accessible to the Sun xVM Ops Center Enterprise Controller through the network.

To Discover a System Using Custom Discovery

Custom Discovery enables you to discover gear according to specific criteria, including searches for specific IP addresses, IP ranges, or gear connected to particular subnets. In this example, you discover a single system by specifying its IP address as the discovery criteria.

  1. Launch a web browser.
  2. Connect to the following URL, and replace server with the IP address or host name of the Sun xVM Ops Center Enterprise Controller.
    https://server:9443

  3. Accept any certificates presented.
The Sun xVM Ops Center login page is displayed.
  4. In the appropriate fields, enter the name and password of the administrative user on the Sun xVM Ops Center Enterprise Controller.
The Sun xVM Ops Center main page is displayed.
  5. Select Gear from the Navigation pane, then select the All Gear item in the list of gear.
  6. Select Custom Discovery from the Actions pane.
The Custom Gear Discovery panel is displayed.

This image shows the Custom Gear Discovery panel.

  7. In the Custom Gear Discovery panel, click the New Criteria button.
The Specify Gear Discovery Criteria panel is displayed. Fields in the Specify Gear Discovery Criteria panel allow you to specify how you want Sun xVM Ops Center to discover gear.

Caution – The New Criteria button is the icon on the left side of the icon bar in the Custom Gear Discovery panel.

  8. Check Save Criteria for Future Use and Save Password.
  9. Enter a name for this set of discovery criteria in the Discovery Criteria Name field.
  10. For this example, enter the IP address of a system that has an installed instance of Solaris 10 in the IP Addresses, IP Ranges, or Subnets field.
  11. In the In addition, Search For Type list, select Solaris,Linux OS.
The protocol-related fields that allow you to enter an SSH user name and password are displayed.
  12. Enter the access credentials using the following fields:
    • User – Enter either the root user, or the name of the non-root administrative user to use for ssh access.
    • Password – Enter the password for the user that you specified in the User field.
    • Root User – If you specified the root user in the User field, leave this field blank. If you specified a non-root administrative user in the User field, enter the root user name.
    • Root Password – Enter the password for the user you specified in the Root User field.

  13. Click Save.
The named set of discovery criteria is displayed in the Custom Gear Criteria Table.

This image shows the Custom Gear Criteria Table with one example criteria set.

  14. Select the discovery criteria that you just created, and click Discover Gear.
A status message indicates that the discovery job has started.
  15. Click OK to dismiss the status message.

You can use the Jobs listings in the Navigation pane to view the list of jobs and display the status of your discovery job.

To Install a Sun xVM Ops Center Agent on a Discovered System

Sun xVM Ops Center can manage gear that it discovers. Installing a Sun xVM Ops Center agent on systems that can run the agent software enables management functions that are available in Sun xVM Ops Center. This example procedure installs a Sun xVM Ops Center agent on a single system.

  1. Select Gear in the Navigation panel.
  2. Select the All Gear item in the Gear list.
  3. Select the Available to be Managed Gear tab.
Gear that has been discovered but not yet managed is displayed in the All Available Gear to be Managed list.
