Configuring a Windows OS for Remote Monitoring
Sun xVM Ops Center 2.1 can discover, manage, and monitor Windows systems.
Before you can manage and monitor your Windows system, you must enable the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) for remote monitoring and allow the WMI access through your Windows Firewall.
WMI is the infrastructure that is used by Windows-based operating systems for remote management and monitoring operations. It is installed on Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows 2008, but it is often disabled.
Enabling WMI for Remote Monitoring on the Windows System
Perform the following steps on the target host:
- Log in to the WMI on the target host.
- Click Administrative Tools, then click Computer Management.
- Expand Services and Applications.
- On WMI Control, right click Properties.
- Click the Security tab.
- Click the Security button.
- Add the monitoring user (if needed), then check Remote Enable for the user/group that will be requesting WMI data.
Allowing WMI Through Your Windows Firewall
If the target server is running Windows Firewall or Internet Connection Firewall, verify that the remote WMI is allowed access through the firewall.
To read WMI data on a remote server, you need a connection between the Windows target system and the Enterprise Controller. This can only be done at the command prompt. Run the following on the target system if it is running a Windows firewall:
- Go to the Cmd.exe prompt on the target system.
- Type the following command:
netsh firewall set service RemoteAdmin enable
If you do not have Windows Firewall installed, you will receive a message similar to the following:
The following command was not found: firewall.
You can download the free Windows WMI event viewer to get more detailed error messages.
Where to Go From Here
See Monitoring a System with the Windows OS for the attributes available to be monitored and how to display the monitoring information.
For More Information
See Microsoft for more information about WMI. To troubleshoot connectivity issues, you might want to download and install Microsoft's WMI Administrative Tools. The tools include a WMI browser that enables you to connect to a remote machine and browse through the WMI information.
