This list of words is an informal and incomplete list of terms for Sun xVM Ops Center. The terms are in alphabetical order, please click a link to find a list of terms.

Agent

The Agent software, or Agentry, is the ground-level part of xVM Ops Center. It's installed automatically on managed systems.

Baseline

A baseline, or Solaris baseline, is a dated collection of Solaris patches, patch metadata, and tools. Sun releases Solaris baselines on a monthly basis. You can modify a baseline to create a custom patch set by the use of black lists and white lists.

Black List

A black list is a list of Solaris OS patch IDs that you never want to be applied to a host. The black list is used when you are using a baseline to update a Solaris OS.

Channel

Gear

Any asset that xVM Ops Center can manage. Gear can include hardware or software.

Gear Module

This is the module that lets you discover gear, create groups, and decide what modules you want to enable.

Group

A user-defined group of assets. Gear can be grouped by any number of properties, such as type or location. Groups can include other groups.

Module

A module, sometimes referred to as a channel, is a set of features in Sun xVM Ops Center. Modules include Gear, Update, Provisioning, and Management.

Management Module

This module provides information about hardware and software health and basic control over managed systems.

OpenxVM

OpenxVM is the open-source community built around xVM.

Policy

Defines how a job is performed and sets the automation level of the job. A policy file is similar to a response file.
If there is a conflict between a profile and policy, the profile will override the policy.

Profile

Defines component configuration for a specific type of system. A profile lets you define what is allowed, and not allowed, to be installed on a system. If there is a conflict between a profile and policy, the profile will override the policy.

Provisioning Module

This module installs operating systems and firmware.

Proxy

The Proxy is the mid-level portion of xVM Ops Center. It pulls jobs from the Satellite Server and directs their execution.

S-Z

Satellite Server

This is the top portion of xVM Ops Center. The Satellite Server hosts the user interface and communicates with the Sun Datacenter.

Sun xVM

This is a blanket term for Sun's virtualization and management solutions, including Sun xVM Ops Center and Sun xVM Server.

Sun xVM Ops Center

Sun xVM Ops Center is a data center management tool that allows you to discover, provision, patch and manage your gear.

Sun xVM Server

Sun xVM Server is a hypervisor.

Team

A manageable unit of related objects including gear, groups, and team members who can manage them. A team might include everything within a given organization (such as Sun Microsystems, University of Pittsburgh, or My Favorite Sports Team). A team might also include everything associated with a specific function within an organization (such as finance, sales, or application development). Teams can include other teams.

Team Member

A user, as defined by either Sun Online Account (SOA) identifier or local username, that can view or modify the information for a team.

Update Module

This module patches operating systems.

White List

A list of Solaris OS patch IDs that you always want to be applied to a host. The white list is used when you are using a baseline to update a Solaris OS.
