Once you've discovered gear, you can register it. Registering your discovered gear specifies which parts of Sun xVM Ops Center should be able to manage the gear. You can register gear with the Provisioning, Update, and Management Modules.

For instance, for a normal system without any special requirements, you could register it with all of the modules. However, if you have a system that you don't want to patch for compatibility reasons, you could register it with only the Provisioning and Management Modules.

To Register Gear and Enable Channels

  1. From the Gear menu, select Register and Enable.
  2. By default, all eligible modules for a piece of gear are enabled. To deselect a module, select the check box for the individual gear.
    • To remove all gear from provisioning, click Deselect Provision.
    • To remove all gear from updates, click Deselect Update.
    • To remove all gear from management, click Deselect Monitor.
  3. (Optional) To provision the Sun xVM agentry on an eligible operating system, provide your root user name in the SSH User field and your root password in the SSH Password field.
  4. Click Register/Enable.
Note
Do not register your Sun xVM Ops Center server or proxy with the Update Module.
If you attempt to use the Update Module to update the operating system that is hosting the Sun xVM Ops Center server or the Sun xVM Ops Center proxy, the update job might not run properly.

Once you have registered your gear, Agent installation should begin automatically. You can then create groups for your gear or begin provisioning, updating and managing it.

To Manage Channels

You can change the settings for your gear. The Manage Channels option lets you enable or disable modules for specific gear or for all gear at any time.

  1. From the Gear menu, select Manage Channels.
  2. The current settings will appear. To select a module, select the checkbox for the individual gear. To deselect a module, deselect the checkbox.
  4. Click Manage Channels.
