Monitoring and Managing Server Power States

Power States

You can power on and power off a managed host by using this channel. Servers will be powered on, and if boot PROMs are configured, the servers will boot. Stopping a server initiates a graceful shutdown of the operating system and subsequent power-off of the managed server. If there is no operating system, you have to force a shutdown of the server. The following power states are displayed:

  • On - The server is powered on and running.
  • Standby - The server is powered off but still responsive to commands, for example, start and reset.
  • Unknown - An error occurred while attempting to retrieve the power status of the hardware. The server is connected but does not returning any information on power status.
  • Unreachable - The server cannot be contacted for information about its power state. This is most often caused by a network problem or the server is in the standby mode.

Powering Off or Powering On a Server or Chassis

This procedure describes how to power on a managed server or a server group. Servers will be powered on and, if boot PROMs are configured, the servers will boot.

  1. Choose Server or Chassis from the Management menu.
    Appropriate management information appears.
  2. Select the object that you want to start.
  3. Choose Power On from the Actions drop-down menu.
  4. To start the gear, choose Default Power On.
  5. To start the gear and use a manual network boot, choose Power On with Network Boot.
A manual network boot is required for OS-based or manually discovered servers.
  6. To proceed with power on, click the OK button.
    A job is submitted.
  7. To view status of your job, click the Jobs Running section of the xVM Ops Center masthead.
The Server Power On job appears in the Jobs table.
Troubleshooting

Jobs initiated on groups of servers will run longer than jobs on individual servers.
