Overview
The Gear module provides an easy way to discover and identify the assets in your data center.
Once you have installed Sun xVM Ops Center, your next step is to discover your gear and register it with Sun xVM Ops Center.

Sun xVM Ops Center lets you use the following methods to discover your gear:
- Basic Discovery, which uses Sun Service tags.
- Custom Discovery, which uses standard protocols such as SSH, IPMI, Telnet, and SNMP.
- Manual Discovery, which uses a manual discovery file.
 | Note To manage your systems with the other modules, you must first discover and register your gear. Once you've discovered the gear, you determine which channels you want to use with the gear, and you register the gear with those modules. |
In some cases, a module will not be available for a piece of gear. This is because the module does not interact with that piece of gear.
Once you have discovered your gear, your next step is to register it with the modules of Sun xVM Ops Center. This lets the modules interact with the discovered gear. Once the gear has been registered, Agent software installation should begin automatically.
