Compatibility & Platform Enablers Projects

Project name Description Priority (1-5) Goal Plan Resource Requirement (eng weeks)
KEYBOARD STRATEGY:
(4) Increase the coverage in SunOS keyboard layouts This is to increase the available keyboard layouts at OS layer so that there will be maximum number of matches between OS and X11 layers in terms of the keyboard layout ids. 3 See description. ToDo after the migration of XKB data (project (10) at below). Coverage in SunOS has been increased in last builds (snv_110/snv_111) and will be increased in further builds. 3 engineer days per case (ongoing)
(5) Increase the coverage in Xorg XKB keyboard layouts This is to maximally support the available keyboard layouts at the X11 layer. 2 See description. snv_110 and later Nevada builds. Done and at the same time, on-going. 3 engineer days per case (ongoing)
(7) Establish "Contracted" interfaces between Xorg/Xnewt/X libs and IIIMP Properties that can be used to query and set keyboard layout This is to identify necessary interfaces that are currently Project/Consolidation Private Interfaces at and used by HAL and X server groups and promote them to at least Contracted Consolidation Private Interfaces so that G11N consolidation also can use the interfaces as needed to query and set the keyboard layouts via GUI utility from us. 2 See description. By the end of May 2009.
(8) Update of IIIM Properties to set the Xorg/Xnewt keyboard layout This is a GUI utility that we would like to have as the one-stop solution for user keyboard layout selection. 3 See description. OpenSolaris.next.next
(9) Update of IM to use Xorg/Xnewt XKB data This is to reduce redundancy we have in terms of the available and used XKB data and has two steps:
(9).1. As the first step, IIIM emulation layer will use the latest XKB data.
(9).2. As the second step and as a new feature, IIIM emulation layer will directly use the XKB data at X11 layer.
(9).1. P2
(9).2. P3
See description. (9).1. snv_115 or 116.
(9).2. OpenSolaris.next.next
(9).1. 4 w.
(11) Maintenance of Solaris/OpenSolaris XKB data for all components Related to the projects (9), (10), and (14), there will be a single maintainer of XKB data for all possible consumers of the XKB data.
EGC (J.A.) will synchronize our XKB data with the xkeyboard-config release.
2 See description. Done for the single maintainer. Other part of the project, on-going activity. N/A - ongoing
(12) Participate at the xkeyboard-config project This is to own and contribute Sun XKB data files and also to work "up-stream" at the community. 2 See description. Depending on "Legal" matters, J.A. should be able to actively participate in the next xkeyboard-config release (April 2009). N/A - ongoing
(13) Better documentation on keyboards and IM technologies This project is to enrich and maintain documents related to keyboards and IM technologies.
Phase 1. For end-user focusing on how to use keyboards and IM features.
Phase 2. For developers focusing on development of related components and technologies.
3 See description. Initial delivery at OpenSolaris.next.next and then on-going activity.
(14) Common keyboard data between OS and X layers This project is to supply a single keyboard data for both OS and X11 layers. 4 See description. TBD
OPERATING SYSTEM:
(C) Optimizing unique collation weight at our locale shared objects for faster and smaller locales. There is an issue of too big a locale due to we have to have a unique collation weight (int32_t) for each character we support at our locales. As we have to support about a million characters per locale, this has been the major source of big locale size and also a drag to overall performance in collation.
We need to find out a resolution for this problem to have a better performance and smaller locales.
2 For more details, see description. Based on internal discussion among some members and the 7z compression ratio being used which is quite good, we no longer see this as a P1 project and hence downgraded to P2 as of 4/27/2009. I.S. is the primary owner. Actual owner will be decided later if available. 4
(D) Shareable locale shared objects to reduce disk and memory foot print of locales. Currently we have all categories of locale data aggregated into a locale shared object for each locale while some of the locale categories that are big in size can be shared among locales as they are the same such as LC_TYPE and LC_COLLATE among Spanish language locales.
Due to OpenSolaris CD size limitation and also the current big foot print in both hard disk and memory, it is important for our business to reduce the overall foot print in the storage medium and memory so that things will be lighter and perform better.
This will not only yield extra space to other components but also significantly reduce our locale build time.
2 For more details, see description. Based on internal discussion among some members and the 7z compression ratio being used which is quite good, we no longer see this as a P1 project and hence downgraded to P2 as of 4/27/2009. O.S. is the primary owner. S.M. will speak with O.S. on the resource issue. Target build is snv_121 (08/10/2009). 8
(G) XPG7 I18N new features and corresponding locale changes As XPG7 is being published, we anticipate that there might be yet another project from ON that will require changes in our locale data structures and methods to support the new MT-safe, per locale internationalization API in XPG7.
As needed, we need to participate in the project and update our locales.
2 See description. TBD
(I) I18N bug fixes There are numerous I18N bugs that are not being taken care of that we might consider putting our resource and fix them as needed and case-by-case. See also here 2 To minimize impact to G11N business. TBD
X WINDOW SYSTEM AND INPUT TECHNOLOGY:
iii) Possible consideration of XKB2 including re-architecturing of keyboard definition and support This is to simplify and mordernize keyboard definitions by re-architecturing the XKB. 3 See description. TBD
iv) Analysis and possible work on inter-platform text communications between virtual desktops, esp., for seamless mode. This project proposes to do alanysis on inter-platform text communication between virtual desktop applications of different platforms on the same GUI desktop. Afterward, we may need to enhance ours to have seamless text interchange and communications between two applications from different platforms on the same GUI desktop. 3 See description. TBD
v) Pluggable layer interface and protocol definition for alternative input method engine This project proposes to have a pluggle layer interface and protocol definitions so that alternative input method engines can be easily plugged into existing input framework. The alternative input method engines include hand writing recognition and speech recognition engines. 2 See description. TBD

CLDR for OpenSolaris
Integrate latest version of CLDR into OpenSolaris 2
The goal is to integrate the latest version of CLDR data into OpenSolaris whenever it is available.
Integrate CLDR 1.7 into OpenSolaris.NEXT (next after OS2009.06)
  4 weeks (incl. QA)
Transition plan for LocaleData
Create a transition plan (and implement ir) for existing customers who would like to migrate to OpenSolaris
2
Supported version (Solaris 10) and OpenSolaris uses different content of locale data. Once Sun starts offering Long-Term support, existing customers may start migrating their deployments from previous Marketing release (S9, S10) into OpenSolaris-based release. In such cases, I expect a lot of customer calls due to locale data inconsistency between those release. G11n has to have a plan (and working solution) that will be offred to such migrating customers (e.g. repository with 'Stable locale data' and 'CLDR' version)
Start with plan. According to the plan implement steps that are required.
  2 weeks for a plan
Locale Creator

  2. Announce to community - gather external/internal feedback
  3. Prepare project specification

G11n community involvement
Increase involvement of G11n team in OS.o i18n community and increase visibility of G11n team and its projects
2
This is a shared project - i.e. all projects mentioned above can contribute to this project 'G11n community involvement'. The major goal is to start tracking our community activities and setup reasonable metrics.
Should be ongoing activity
  • number of presentations delivered externally (e.g. to university students, OSUGs, conferences) * number of emails sent to i18n-discuss@opensolaris.org -vs- internal mail list
(e.g. see the stats page) * number of bloggers and entries, and their popularity (TB Clarified)
N/A- Ongoing activity
