CTI Survey Results

In September 2009 we launched a survey to find out bit more about CTI users and identify priorities of requests for CTI enhancements. We took all RFEs and created 8 groups that were evaluated by CTI users.

During 10 days we collected 57 answers (37 fully finished) from participants from all over the world.

About Users

The submitters covered 20 languages and 4 continents:

• Europe (54%)
• Asia (24%)
• America (16%)
• Africa (6%)

The respondents contribute to all (5) projects running in CTI:

• Netbeans (22)
• OpenSolaris (14)
• GlassFish (3)
• OpenSSO (3)
• OpenDS (1)

14% people translate more than 1 product. The most respondents participate to NetBeans project (22 responses) and to OpenSolaris (14 responses). Details about the number of contributors per project and their experience can be found in table below

RFEs Priorities

A key part of the survey was the prioritization of RFEs submitted by you during last several months. From all RFEs you sent us we created 8 pre-defined groups containing similar or the same requests. Each respondent could prioritize RFEs group by points (1-10), so the sum is equal to 10. Higher number means higher priority.  The results are shown as a bar chart below.

The top winners (with score 80) are:

• Search
• Availability of 'Enhanced' Translation technologies (like Glossary, Terminology Database, etc)

followed by Export/Import feature.

The order of other RFEs can be evaluated from the bar chart directly.

Satisfaction with CTI

 A respondent had to choose one of 4 options:

• SUPER: I am very satisfied with CTI.
• GOOD: CTI is good, translation work with CTI is OK. However some improvements are needed.
• POOR: CTI has a lot of drawbacks but I can still use it for a translation.
• BAD: CTI is bad and (almost) unusable. I do not use CTI (stopped / will stop using) 

According to the results (pie chart above), 78% users see CTI tool as a good tool, 22% are not satisfied with CTI. Even the overall result seems to be good (honestly above our expectations) we are aware of the fact that a lot of improvements and features are still needed.

Other Data

What impressed me was the following statistics:

• Willingness to help with l10n projects running in CTI - here 51% (yes more than half) responded YES, so they can help other l10n teams with their translation activities

• Willingness to help with a possible development of CTI (e.g. development, promotion, documentation, etc) - in this case, 57% users were interested in possible CTI development.

T-shirts Winners

At the end I'd like to thank everybody who spent their time and helped us to understand more the current status around the CTI tool.

To reward some of those who took their time and answered our questions we announced that 20 free T-shirts will be given out. The draw took place in the SUN office in Prague and lucky winners have been contacted and will receive their T-shirts soon.
