Compiler Segmentation Faults on OpenSolaris 2009.06

Segmentation faults during compilation have been noticed on the latest Solaris 10 and OpenSolaris releases.

ld: fatal: file /opt/sunstudio12.1/prod/lib/crti.o: section [9].rela.annotate has invalid type [ SHT_RELA ]
f95: Fatal error in ld: Segmentation Fault
*** Error code 1 (ignored)

Fortunately, there is a workaround: compile with the -xannotate=no option.

AMD Barcelona Chip Is Supported

The documentation does not mention that the compilers will accept -xtarget=barcelona on x86/x64. It expands to:

-xarch=amdsse4a -xcache=64/64/2:512/64/16 -xchip=amdfam10

Corrections to -xtarget Expansions

The -xtarget expansions for ultra3, ultra3i, ultra3cu, ultra3iplus, ultra4, ultra4plus all include -xarch=sparcvis2. Also the documentation does not mention that -xtarget will accept ultra4 and ultra4plus

The expansion of -xtarget=ultra4 is

-xarch=sparcvis2 -xcache=64/32/4:8192/128/2 -xchip=ultra

The expansion of -xtarget=ultra4plus is

-xarch=sparcvis2 -xcache=64/32/4/1:2048/64/4/2:32768/64/4/2 -xchip=ultra4plus

Note that you can always check the expansion of any -xtarget option by invoking the compiler with the -### option with cc or -xdryrun with CC and f95. For example

$ CC -xdryrun -xtarget=ultra4
###     command line files and options (expanded):
### -dryrun -xarch=sparcvis2 -xcache=64/32/4:8192/128/2 -xchip=ultra4 

Universal Character Names

The C++ and C compilers support Universal Character Names. Here is a list of the valid hexadecimal values that may appear in C++ identifiers. Note that the ranges 0041-005a and 0061-007a cover the upper and lower case English alphabets, which are part of the basic source character set. However, the standard is the specification, and if there are any differences, the standard takes precedence. This appears in Annex D of the C language standard, and Annex E of the C++ standard.
