How to Register Your Gear

Tag Your Gear

To register your gear, your products must have a Sun Service Tag. Service tags are embedded in many recent versions of Sun products. If you want to register Solaris 8, 9, or early versions of Solaris 10 OS, you can download a service tag package for your Solaris OS.

Discover Your Gear

  1. Click the Discover & Register button.
  2. Identify the location to be scanned for products by selecting one of the following:
    * Locate Products on Local Subnet
    * Locate Products on Other Subnets, Specific Systems or Load Previously Saved Data button. Specify any additional subnets, host names, or IP addresses to scan.
  3. Click Next to bring up a screen that allows you to identify the gear on your specific system or systems.
  4. Review the results of the scan.
The Product Data screen displays the hardware and software Service Tags for specific products. Roll your cursor over products to view information about an asset. You can also save preferences (location data) of selected gear for future use.

Register Your Gear

  1. Click Next to bring up a screen that allows you to log on to or create a Sun account. Click one of the following:
    * I already have a Sun Online Account.
    * I don't have a Sun Online Account. Sign me up!
  2. If you have multiple teams, select the team to which you want to register your gear.
  3. Click Next to log in and bring up a screen that allows you to determine which gear to register.
  4. Select and edit the gear data before registration.
    * (optional) Enter additional information, such as a description, contract ID, or the location of the gear.
    * Choose to register some or all of the products by selecting the check boxes in the far right column.
  5. Click View Terms of Use and select the check box if you agree.
  6. Click Next to finish the registration process.

IMHO, this document creates more questions than it answers. We should not assume that the reader knows what we are talking about or has read information from whatever site directed them to this doc. We should not:

    • use undefined terms i.e., "gear"
    • jump into "Click the Discover & Register button." without mentioning what application provides this function

Any document we create should be able to stand on it's own...

We could say something like, these are the general steps that need to be followed.... for information on the registration application, please go to...

      Hi Ed,

We've moved the registration information to the Sun Inventory information center at http://wikis.sun.com/display/SunInventory/Sun+Inventory and are working on clarifying the process.
