Purpose of the Oracle 10g R2 RAC Plug-In

The Oracle 10g R2 RAC plug-in software enables you to install the supporting software structure and create Oracle RAC databases in this environment. The plug-in simplifies and increases the reliability of the process of deploying Oracle 10g R2 RAC database software throughout your enterprise. It is packaged in a Java™ Archive (JAR) file that loads into an N1 SPS environment.

What the Oracle 10g R2 RAC Plug-In Includes

The plug-in enables you to perform the following main functions:

  • Create the Oracle user that is needed to own the Oracle software.
  • Install the Sun Cluster software components that are needed to support the Oracle RAC environment.
  • Install the Oracle UNIX Distributed Lock Manager (UDLM) package.
  • Create the Sun Cluster framework resource groups and resources that are needed to support Oracle RAC.
  • Install the shared QFS file system software.
  • Create shared QFS file systems.
  • Install the Oracle Clusterware (or CRS) software.
  • Install the Oracle RAC software (Enterprise or Standard Edition).
  • Create an Oracle Automated Storage Management (ASM) database.
  • Create Oracle RAC databases on either shared QFS, raw disk, or with Oracle ASM.

The plug-in can also expand and contract deployments off all the components that it deploys, such as Sun Cluster resource groups, shared QFS file systems, Oracle CRS and RAC software installations, and ASM and user databases. It also has the capability to "attach" to existing installations that have been deployed with or without using an N1 SPS plug-in. Components achieve this by having the equivalent of an N1 SPS "markOnly" installation step capability built into their "default" installation blocks. The limitations of this capability are described in the individual component plan sections of this guide.
