Testing the Topic
Ron_J2ME: I can hear the audio with Firefox 2
cfende02> Thanks.
Erica.A.Ramsey: no jsr 184 support?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> Please note that as per the published device specifications, it is not supported. For more details, feel free to visit http://developer.sprint.com/view_devices.do?device=79542
Ron_J2ME: Jay - does the javadocs for the frames exist in the WTK 3.3?
Jay-Sprint> Yes, the Javadocs for the Instinct Widget Library are available with the WTK. We are releasing an update today as WTK 3.3.1 that includes some bug fixes as well as full support for the Instinct emulator. The Widget Library Javadocs are bundled with the Sprint extensions 2.2 that are supported on the Instinct.
Ron_J2ME: Can we get any discount on the instinct device itself for testing?
cfende02>
Well - it's available in the VDL.
iNsTIncT: where do we get this ppt for download?
cfende02> We will have an archive of the cast 48-72 hours after the cast. We can also provide the actual ppt as well.
DanGJavaGeek: ppt would be useful, thanks @cfende02
Your question has been submitted.
kryptos1: Hey DANGJavaGeek
cfende02> Hi!
iNsTIncT: thanks
cfende02> np.
Ron_J2ME: Jay - does the javadocs for the frames exist in the WTK 3.3?
Jay-Sprint> The "Getting Started" guide available on the ADP website on developing with Instinct also outlines how you can set up the Javadocs with your NetBeans installation.
DanGJavaGeek: ppt would be useful, thanks @cfende02
cfende02>
OptRocky: Will there be some sort of update today for the phone itself?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> We are looking into areas that may need over the air (OTA) updates, however, we may not presently release specifics on scope and schedule for these. Please stay tuned to the ADP Portal to learn when these become available.
robinShazam: Could a techie please confirm the formats of audio supported for MMAPI recording? For example AMR (wide or narrow), WAV, etc
Jay-Sprint> Instinct supports widely adopted and efficient encoding formats AAC, AAC+ as well as AMR, QCELP, MIDI
ravikalidindi: How can I access the speech-to-action functionality? Ex: I would like my application to react to speech commands.
Jay-Sprint> Speech-to-action is only available for native device apps and currently is not available as an API for use with downloaded apps.
DanGJavaGeek: note there's some distortion occurring in the podcast display... the Instinct emulator has the same dimensions / height vs. width ratio as the Instinct handset when you run it on your desktop
Your question has been submitted.
Erica.A.Ramsey: the graphics developers wanted to know vram size on the device.
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> As per the published device specifications, the RAM is 128MB whilst ROM is 256MB. Please note that it supports an external SD card of up to 8GB. For more details, feel free to visit http://developer.sprint.com/view_devices.do?device=79542
mpoole: I noticed that there is a "Developing Bluetooth Apps" download for the Instinct. Is this because there are things of note that are different from other Sprint devices that have JSR82 support?
AMBREEN> The bluetooth whitepaper discusses bluetooth application development and integrating it with the Instinct UI. The JSR-82 features discussed in the whitepaper are also applicable on other Sprint JSR-82 capable devices. However developing OBEX application on Instinct would be discussed in an upgrade to the whitepaper as this support is currently available only on Instinct.
DanGJavaGeek: note there's some distortion occurring in the podcast display... the Instinct emulator has the same dimensions / height vs. width ratio as the Instinct handset when you run it on your desktop
cfende02> thanks for the feedback.
David924: How close is the instinct emulator to the actual device? It seems it has all the features but will preformance be close?
Jay-Sprint> The Instinct emulator offers true display resolution as the device as well as actual libraries for the widgets. The handset performance (chipset speed and graphics rendering, for example) is dependent upon the underlying windows operating system and computer hardware, however you can use the Sprint Virtual Developer Lab to try your apps on a real Instinct handset. Additionally, the Sprint WTK uses Apple QuickTime player for multi-media rendering but media playback is identical to the real hanset.
Ron_J2ME: Please have Ryan speak up...
cfende02> I sent him a note. Does he sound better on your side?
Ron_J2ME: Yes - thanks
cfende02>
OptRocky: lol he sounds fine, turn up your speakers ron =P
ravikalidindi: Will that change soon?
Jay-Sprint> we are evaluating support for speech API possibly on later models. It requires update to the JVM which is not currently supported via OTA.
cfende02> Sorry to the individual that asked the heap question. We lost it in the backend, but believe we have the gist and will be answering shortly. If it doesn't address your entire question, please resubmit.
Ron_J2ME: What is the heap size specifically? I see it states"OEM Heap memory available to other BREW applications (MB) 37MB" but is all of that available to Java?
Jay-Sprint> Every Java app for the Instinct is guaranteed a minimum amount of heap (2MB) at launch and the MIDlet can ask for more heap during its lifetime. A maximum 15MB total heap is available to Java apps. If your app requires more than 2 MB of heap at launch, you can use the MIDlet-Heap-Size attribute in the JAD file to set the heap size in bytes.
G.I.Lee: Hello. I have an app that requires UDP datagram socket. Can I do that on the Instinct?
Ram_K> Yes, You can have a UDP datagram socket in your app using the standard MIDP network API.
nathan_sprint_adp: what is the heap size available to java apps on the Instinct handset
Jay-Sprint> Just answered on the previsous question, 2 MB at startup and the app can request more from 15MB total Java heap available.
Ron_J2ME: that was the question - thanks
cfende02>
Thx.
OptRocky: Will we see Sprint Devs releasing Theme packages for the Instinct in the future?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> These are potential directions to take with this platform, however, it will require additional internal evaluations and no decision or commit exists as of yet.
pinewaves72: I get a Win32 error in Zayit.exe when trying to run any of the sample applications. Anyone else having this issue?
Jay-Sprint> The error in zayit.exe indicates it is happening inside the emulator runtime. Can you provide the actual error text and email it to SprintADP@sprint.com and we will investigate. We are also releasing an updated WTK3.3.1 with more bug fixes today, please try the new release and let us know your issues are persistent.
k_mehr: 1) If you type JavaBrew or just Brew into Messaging it will go through system reset 2) If you are in a call and we get an incoming caller while using earbuds it doesn't specify who the incoming caller is. It just states that you have an incoming call 3) mobile sync doesn't sync all contacts (had to replace phone and so far only 10 of my 85 contacts have synced--> Still missing 75 of my contacts) 4) GPS Traffic always shows N/A --> I never was able to get the traffic to work 5) No Copy/Paste feature in Messaging and Notes 6) Cannot sign in onto www.sprint.com from Instinct Browser 7) Cannot send file to Phone's memory via Blue Tooth (it always goes straight to the Micro SD Card)
Jay-Sprint> Thank you for sharing feedback, we appreciate it much and are actively working on resolving with a future maintenance release update.
robinShazam: sorry if i missed this but is there a date for a European launch, or developer access for a real device usable in UK for example? (not cdma)
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> We appreciate your inquiry, however, we cannot comment or speculate on items beyond Sprint's control, e.g. Samsung's Instinct for CDMA, as it is deployed in the USA.
Fontano: In the API, will there be access to the Video playback features of the instinct. So applications can be developed that can access Internet/Data based video streams. We are developing native applications for the various top of the line mobile phones to access our video streams and we are trying to identify if this will be an option for the Instinct and the Sprint network.
nathan_sprint_adp> Yes, Sprint has built out full video playback capabilities through JSR 135. We provide support for RTSP. You can look at the handset specs online to see all of the video codecs supported but a summary is h.264 video encoding with aac, aac+, mpeg3, mpeg4, etc
k_mehr: will the incomming call feature have a fix for it (if I am using my earbuds I cannot see who the incoming call is comming from...All I see is that I have an incoming call)
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> As noted previously, we are looking into customer and developer feedback to quickly address issues. Thanks for bring this up.
Ron_J2ME: what push registry is supported - only SMS? It says WAP push, but how is that accomplished to a handset if it is not in a data session?
Jay-Sprint> Java apps are limited to using SMS only Push Registry. WAP push via Service Indicator/Service Loading is used internally in the app but not available to downloadable apps at this time.
kevnb: Type here
cfende02> Hi, we see you - but no question, please let us know if we can help with something.
ilovecontrol: just curioous, did you guys work with apple in developing this? They seem so much alike
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> This device has been developed primarily by Sprint and Samsung.
Blubble: Do you have a webcast archive that will allow viewing later?
cfende02> Yes, it will be available 48 - 72 post cast via the website: What's New Tab > Education
Fontano: Fantastic... time to go and have the purchasing depart get me an instinct...
cfende02>
ilovecontrol: can you guys create some of the transitions they have. like flipping pages etc? I have seen something like this in other apis.
Jay-Sprint> We are looking at offering transitions, fade-in/fade-out features on future versions. Developers can create their own transition effects within their apps but no APIs available within the current Widget Library.
CRiley570: I know there's no definite date, but any general feeling on release of that maintenance update besides in "months"?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> We are looking to release identified updates at the earliest opportunity, however, due to the complex nature of the several items being looked at and feature interactions, while we are expeditiously working to have required updates released at the earliest, we are yet committing to a specific date.
JorisHoogeboom: What are the technical specifications regarding developing games for Sprint? How many polys can it push, what amount of VRAM, any 3d API?
Jay-Sprint> Instinct supports JSR 226 SVG, mobile 3D is not supported due to limitation of the JVM on the display size. We will publish additional details regarding gaming support as a whitepaper in the near future. Good question, appreciate your feedback.
Ron_J2ME: What is the heap size specifically? I see it states"OEM Heap memory available to other BREW applications (MB) 37MB" but is all of that available to Java?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> As noted previously by Mr. Indurkar, 2MB startup per MIDlet, which could be raised to the maximum Java heap of 15MB.
runawayq: Some of us noticed some more features for instinct camera listed on one of sprints website. are there any plans to make more of those features available for the instinct?
nathan_sprint_adp> can you be more specific - we support JSR 135, there is no support for JSR 234 (which would provide things like zoom and other camera enhanced feature support that isn't included in JSR 135)
OptRocky: When do you guys think we will start to see companys such as Time Warners AOL and Microsofts MSN release there Instant Messaging services on the Instinct?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> Unfortunately we can speculate on the product development plans of these other companies. We may have to listen to the media and their individual postiions.
k_mehr: What about support for a different OS? Would the Instinct be able to handle a different Open Source OS such as Android?
Jay-Sprint> Current hardware uses a RTOS over Qualcomm chipset. Supporting a different OS will require firmware updates and alternatives will be considered when they are ready for deployment.
Blubble: Is the new WTK available on the developer site yet?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> The WTK 3.3 is available and soon the latest 3.3.1, which addresses minor enhancements.
Blubble: Are there any plans to support other languages, particularly Spanish? I noticed that the device will display special characters such as ñ, but none of the keyboards have this character or others like it.
Ram_K> Thank you for your feedback. The instinct does not support Spanish currently but we are looking at the possibility of supporting other languages in our future releases.
loganme: Is there a plan to distribute the apps developed for the instinct (ie sprint digital lounge) in a manner similar to the iphone app store so that users can find many apps in a central location?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> Although an idea that has been pondered, there is presently no definitive plan or commitment to move in that direction or otherwise. In the spirit of openness, Sprint supports a model where developers can create applications, distribute and market at their will without the limitations found in traditional mobile content distribution as part of a managed environment controlled by the operator/carrier.
ravikalidindi: Are there API's to access the LiveSearch and GPS Mapping Functions?
Jay-Sprint> Live Search and Navigation are self-contained applications. Location API is available for Java apps via JSR 179. Java apps can also launch the Live Search and Nav apps, we are looking at providing the URI schemes for launching these apps.
OptRocky: Will there be some sort of update for the Streaming TV aspect of the Instinct? It has its little freezing and picture quality issues
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> Thanks for the feedback. We are looking into this and assessing.
G.I.Lee: Is there any plan to make the Athena UI and other Instinct-specific APIs available to other touchscreen devices that Sprint carries? (Say HTC Touch?)
Jay-Sprint> The widget library can be bundled with the MIDlet and downloaded on other Java enabled touchcreen handsets but currently the Athena UI is scoped to be supported on the Instinct models only. We are going to offer the LightWeight UI Toolkit as an alternative solution for touchscreen and non-touch devices.
coderjun: Being that this is a brew device are there plans to support Flash Lite?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> Supporting Flash in already deployed Sprint devices may be complex and challenging. We'll inform the community regarding decisions for future devices.
k_mehr: Will the Instinct be able to handle/support a 16GB or 32gb MicroSD card whenever they are released?
Ram_K> Instinct at max supports 8GB MicroSD card but we are definately going to look at extending this functionaly in our future releases. Thank you for your feedback.
Blubble: Is the new WTK available on the developer site yet?
AMBREEN> Yes, please visit http://developer.sprint.com/instinct for WTK download and for the updates to the toolkit.
Mjpiekarski: Any plans for Linux support for the emulator?
nathan_sprint_adp> currently they are not as this is based on the Sun WTK and they do not have LInux support yet. We are starting to see a lot more requests to support non-windows mobile development environments (Linux, Apple OS) that we are definitely providing that feedback to Sun as they would need to build the base OS support in their core Java ME SDK. thanks for the question
ilovecontrol: cool thanks! We are already developing for insinct. Very happy with the results, thanks! Are you going to have an App Store to help us sell the apps?
Raymond_Reeves_ADP> We currently allow business relations to promote and distribute through Sprint's content store. Feel free to contact a Sprint product manager to discuss potentials for inclusion.
Mjpiekarski: I found the Media Sync to be painful in windows. Are any updates going to be released for that?
Jay-Sprint> Instinct offers a Media Manager solution that can sync music, photos and videos. This is a self-contained service in current version of Instinct. The handset also offers a contact sync service.
G.I.Lee: Can Java apps take advatnage of the MicroSD card? Is it through the FileConnection API? Is there special security required?
nathan_sprint_adp> yes they can - they use the JSR 75 File connection API
G.I.Lee: Can Java apps take advatnage of the MicroSD card? Is it through the FileConnection API? Is there special security required?
nathan_sprint_adp> yes they can utilize the SD card through JSR 75 File connection API
k_mehr: Will we have an app which will allow us to view PDF, DOC, XLS, PPT Files? Also what about a file explorer?
AMBREEN> Currently there is no such application available for this purpose. Integration will require custom development on the developer's part. We have noted down this request and will keep you updated via ADP website as we add new features and upgrades.
k_mehr: Will the OTA update include support to open/view PDF, DOC, PPT, XLS files and will there be a file explorer? With future releases wod you mean updates or Instinct 2?
Jay-Sprint> Currently, productivity tools can be made available by 3rd parties. We are not at a stage where we can offer more insights on future updates be it for current model or future versions. Stay tuned for more information though.
ravikalidindi: Whenever you provide the URI schemes to launch Livesearch and/or Nav applications, will we have the ability to send parameters along with the request. For ex, could I say launch Nav and show directions from a to b at launch itself.
Jay-Sprint> Yes, you will be able to send parameters with the URI launch request when it is published.
jmonani: How Instinct Widget or LWUI is related to Titan. Also is it based on XUI and can it run on other basic feature phones or any plans to have same on feature phones?
Jay-Sprint> Instinct Widget Library is specific to the Instinct device. LWUI is going to be the default UI model for Sprint Titan platform. xUI is a new UI design paradigm that is targeted for current generation of feature phones to make content discovery better and enhance user-device interaction.
sprint4400: I'm sure many here are looking for answers as to how/when we'll be able to use already existing MIDP2.0 apps, like every other java enabled phone.
Jay-Sprint> Definitely understand your position and actively working on an update that will allow current MIDP2.0 apps to run on the Instinct. The Instinct Java platform is based on CLDC/MIDP2.0 with the UI model supported via the Widget Library.
Ron_J2ME: Any plans to support JSR300 (DRM for JavaME)?
Ram_K> As the JSR 300 is not complete, the Instinct currently does not support the JSR. Even after the release it will take us about 6 months to integrate it. Therefore, we will look at the possibility of extending this functionality in our future releases.
Mjpiekarski: Any hope to get the Exchange OWA sync to work with exchange 2007... i noticed it fails with 2007, while it works with 2003
Jay-Sprint> We have tested OWA sync with exchange with the Sprint Email client app, if you are facing issues please send your feedback to SprintADP@sprint.com and we will investigate. Thank you for your feedback.
cfende02> Want to clarify an answer to Blubble regarding WTK available on the Instinct page. The WTK available is an older version. For the updated version, please refer to an earlier answer from Sprint in this chat.
OptRocky:
thank you guys
cfende02> NP.
OptRocky: Will there be any updates in the future to enable Flash (ex, .swf) files on the Instinct?
Jay-Sprint> There is no plan to support flash on current generation of Instinct.
k_mehr: Thank you for all anwsers/help
cfende02> NP
JorisHoogeboom: I think you somehow didn't get my question. What are the tecnical capabilities of sprint regarding game development? Polypushing, VRAM, support for 3d API?
Jay-Sprint> I did get your question but do not have the relevant information to offer at this moment. Will take this back and publish details on the ADP website. Apologies for not being able to offer quick answer on this one.
mmbeltran: When you say that you are looking at extending the functionality to support more than 8gb in future releases, does that mean future hardware releases or firmware/software based updates?
Jay-Sprint> Support for larger memory cards is hardware dependent and will be a consideration with next generation of Instinct models.
robinShazam: is it possible to link directly to the sprint store for, say, music products?
Jay-Sprint> Sorry, didn't quite get this question, can you offer some more detail - thanks.
runawayq: Auto, Negative, Sepia, Emboss, Aqua, Color Tone/ Picture Effects (provide details) Monochrome, Sketch Brightness (provide details) 10 Levels (-5 ~ +5) Shutter sound options (list what they are) 6 Shutter sounds, Say cheese, Off Camera - Self Timer (Yes/No) Yes Camera - Digital Zoom (list X times) 4X (10 levels) List any additional camera capabilities Self Timer, White Balance,Fun Frame
cfende02> Sorry can you clarify the question.
