How to Get MP3 Files to Play with OpenSolaris

  • How to obtain an mp3 decoder
  • How to install Fluendo's mp3 codec
  • How to test if the codec is working

If you cannot play MP3 files with Totem, Rhythmbox or with another player which uses the GStreamer backend, you will need to install an MP3 decoder.

Before You Begin

To complete this procedure, you need:

  • A local copy of the Fluendo MP3 decoder
  • OpenSolaris 2008.05 (B86) or higher
  • An MP3 file for use with a media player
Steps

1. Click the Mozilla Firefox Icon.
Navigate to the following URL:

2. Click the Fluendo MP3 decoder image under Fluendo products

  • If you already have a copy of Fluendo, click on Login or Register link on the top navigation bar.

3. Click on the green Add to Cart button

  • If you have navigated to Login or Register, go ahead and enter your previously used credentials.

4. If you do not have an account, click on the green register button.

  • Make sure to fill out the fields as best as possible and then click the green Continue Checkout button.

5. Click on the Proceed to my products page link and then click on the green Download button

  • Select the most appropriate operating system (Solaris i386)
  • Be sure to save the file and not just open it if you intend to use it later on other systems not on the internet.

6. Open a terminal using the launcher icon on the quick start bar

7. Type in

tar -xjf fluendo-mp3-7.solaris-intel.tar.bz2

to extract the file.

pfexec cp codecs/libgstflump3dec.so /usr/lib/gstreamer-0.10

to copy the decoder file into the correct location.

7. Navigate to an online MP3 store such as Amazon MP3 Downloads, or find an MP3 on one of your hard drives so you can test to see if MP3 files now play back.

  • Be aware of your rights and read the provided LICENSE.txt file

8. Open an MP3 file by double clicking on it, or open it from a player such as Totem or Songbird directly by using File -> Open.

I like the addition of the graphics, but I think they make it hard to follow the steps...the steps get kind of lost.

You may want to try the thumbnail feature:

    !<image_filename>|thumbnail!

This still shows the graphics, but all you need to do is click on the thumbnail if you want to see more detail.

    Just a suggestion.

Hey, I think these instructions are easier to parse with those thumbnail images. Thanks for doing that.

On related matter, did you see that Fluendo made new codecs available?

    However, there's a cost involved.
