How to Set Up a Network-Attached Printer With Solaris LP Print Manager
In the OpenSolaris release, there are two tools that you can use to set up printers.
If you are setting up your own local or network printers in the desktop, use the OpenSolaris Print Manager. This tool includes online help documentation to assist you in configuring your own printers and managing your printing environment.
If you are a system administrator who is responsible for setting up print servers and print clients for users at a site, use the Solaris LP Print Manager or the LP print service commands to configure and manage printers at your site.
You can use Solaris Print Manager to add, modify, and delete printers. However, for some administration tasks, for example, enabling the print scheduler, moving print requests and disabling printers, you must use the LP print commands.
Before You Begin
Consult the vendor documentation about which protocol to use. Network-attached printers might use one or more special protocols that require a vendor-supplied printing program. If vendor-supplied support is not provided, Solaris network printer support most likely can be used. It is recommended that you use the vendor-supplied supported whenever it is possible.
- Connect the printer to the network, then power on the printer.
- On the system that is to be the print server, log in as the root user and start Solaris Print Manager. Choose System > Administration > Solaris LP Print Manager.
- Select the naming service and close the Naming Service window.
- Make sure the default Use PPD files option is selected.

- Provide all the information about the printer, as shown in the following figure.
- To verify that the printer was set up successfully, check Solaris Print Manager.
The printer should be displayed in the list of printers.
- Optional) Print a test page.
# lp -d <printer-name> test
