Checking the Status of Network Connections From the Desktop

In the OpenSolaris 2010.03 release, network configuration is performed automatically through Network Auto-Magic (NWAM) process. One of the NWAM's features is its capability to provide information about the status of your network connections from the GNOME Desktop.

The Network Status panel icon is the primary method for viewing the status of your currently active network connection and for interacting with the NWAM service. You can also hover your mouse over the icon to view information about the currently enabled network connection. The icon's appearance changes, depending on the status of the currently active network connection.

The quickest way to obtain essential information about your network is to look at the Network Status notification icon on the desktop. This icon, which is displayed in the panel notification area of the desktop at all times, changes appearance, depending on the current status of your network.

For example, the following figure shows how the icon looks if your system is connected to a wireless network.

The illustration is described in the previous context.

In the following figure, the system's wired connection has become disconnected. Note how the appearance of the icon has changed.

To see more details about your network connection, click (left-click) the icon.

To launch the Network Preferences dialog where you can configure the preferences of your network connection, as well as access other NWAM dialogs, right-click the notification icon.
