Administering Your Automatic Network Connection

In the OpenSolarisTM release, the Network Auto-Magic (NWAM) process automatically establishes a network connection when your system starts. If you need to modify the automatic connection, refer to the tasks and information in this section.

The following table shows all the major tasks associated with automatic network configuration and includes links to those tasks. You do not perform the tasks in the order shown. Rather, each task is a self-contained procedure.

Task Description For Instructions
Check the status of the network connection. You can obtain information about the active network connection, such as the interface device name and IP address, network name, and more. This information is particularly helpful for troubleshooting your network connection. Checking the Status of Network Connections From the Desktop
Connect to a wireless network when the system starts. If NWAM discovers more than one network while trying to make a wireless connection, you must choose a network from the list of available wireless networks. How to Connect to a Wireless Network at Startup
Change the network connection from a wired to a wireless interface. After the system starts and connects to a wired network, you can change the network connection to a wireless network. How to Change a Connection From Wired to Wireless
Choose a different wireless network. When a wireless network is active, you can change to another available wireless network. How to Change From One Wireless Network to Another Wireless Network
Change the network connection from a wireless to a wired interface. When a wireless interface is active, you can change the network connection to a wired network. How to Change a Connection From Wireless to Wired
Switch the network connection from one wired interface to another wired interface. If your system is a multihomed host, that is, a system with more than one wired interface, you can switch from one wired interface connection to a different wired interface connection. How to Change From One Wired Network to Another Wired Network
Add a network to the list of available networks. A private wireless network at your site might not allow systems to discover its existence. However, you can add it to NWAM's list of available networks. How to Join an Unlisted Wireless Network
Administer the list of “favorite” wireless networks. You can add, delete, and modify the information for the wireless networks that your system has accessed so far, which are your “favorite” networks. How to Manage a List of Favorite Wireless Networks From the Desktop
Manually configure the network. You can turn off NWAM and administer your network connection manually through the OpenSolaris command-line interface. How to Disable and Enable the NWAM Network Service
