About COMSTAR
Common Multiprotocol SCSI TARget, or COMSTAR, is a software framework that enables you to convert any OpenSolaris host into a SCSI target device that can be accessed over a storage network by initiator hosts.
COMSTAR has the following key features:
- OpenSolaris integration - COMSTAR takes advantage of a rich set of OpenSolaris APIs and platform support.
- Standards-based - COMSTAR follows T10 Technical Committee recommendations for SCSI storage interfaces. It supports Target Port Group Support (TPGS) to ensure multipathing capabilities. COMSTAR supports multipathing with MPxIO over IB for iSCSI initiators.
- Logical unit mapping - Specifies client views for each logical unit by defining host and target groups.
- Increased throughput - COMSTAR uses multiple parallel transfers per SCSI command to enhance overall performance.
- On-demand provisioning - Dynamically grows and shrinks storage as needed, with a maximum storage pool size of 8 exabytes (8192 petabytes).
