Hands-on Workshop

Objective:
==========

The Crossbow project in OpenSolaris offers new ways to
do network virtualization, QoS, and debug/analyze the network.
Since the administrative control point for network virtualization
resides on host side, the objective of the workshop is to
get system and network administrators familiar with dealing
with Virtual NICs, Virtual Switches and associated QoS. The
same concepts apply on Cloud computing side as well.

There will be hands on experience with Crossbow command
and control and how it is used in conjunction with Solaris
Zones and Xen style virtualization.

We will also have hands on workshop with Crossbow Virtual
Wire that uses netp2v tools (convert a physical network into
a virtual network in a box) for debugging, functionality
and performance analysis.

Potential attendee profile:
===========================

Solaris and Linux System and Network administrators who deal with:

  • Virtualization
  • Networking Virtualization
  • Debugging network problems and topologies
  • Open source networking
  • Cloud computing
  • Ease of management

Outline of potential topics:
============================

  • Dealing with Virtual NICs and Virtual Switches and associating
    them with virtual machines and container
  • VNICs and VLAN tags, Link aggregation, IPMP
  • Dealing with Advanced NIC hardware capabilities (classification
    and offload)
  • CPU and Bandwidth resource partitioning, QoS, DSCP
  • Virtual Wire (Virtual Networks) and converting physical networks
    into virtual network using Crossbow netp2v tools
  • functionality and performance analysis
