The purpose of a screen name is to protect your user name from being displayed on the web site.
Many users use their email address as their screen name. In a case like this it is necessary to "hide" the user name.
Screen names are shared across forums.sun.com, wikis.sun.com and some other sun.com web applications.
If a user, that hasn't defined his screen name yet, tries to log in to any of these applications, he will be prompted to define the screen name.
