Where can I play with the wiki software? Is there a scratch pad?

We have a [SandBox] space where you can experiment with the wiki. Do not edit someone's pages in other spaces just to try our wiki, use the [SandBox] space for this.

Confluence Site Dashboard also contains a number of preexisting test spaces, such as I Like Cheese.

Where can I find formatting examples?

There is a Confluence Overview space on the Confluence site.

How do I get stars and checkmarks and stuff (aka glyphs and smilies)?

All of these and more are documented here

How do you escape special characters?

You can use the '\' to escape special characters.

How can I add urls to my wiki page so that they are rendered without an actual html link?

There is a nolink macro that can be used for this:

{nolink:http://sun.com}

or a short version:

{nl:http://sun.com}

The result: http://sun.com
