Tips for watching FIRST Events

  • The FIRST website has a complete list of FRC, FTC, and FLL events world-wide.
  • Yes, bring your kids, or the neighbors kids, or strangers off the streets. If a FIRST competition can't show kids how exciting engineering can be, then there's not much point.
  • These are long events, but you can come and go as you please. For example, FRC regionals are three full days long! Check the event schedule for actual competition and ceremony times.
  • Competitions can be loud, with music, play-by-play announcers, and cheerleaders. You are warned.
  • It helps to know the game. Each year FIRST designs a new game with various tasks, points, penalties, etc. For example, the 2009 FRC game is called Lunacy, and involves collecting and shooting items in a low-friction (as a stand-in for low gravity) environment. There's a game description (pdf) as well as video:
  • Touring the "pits" is at least half the fun. This is where you get to see how much energy the students put into these robots. For FRC competitions, protective eyewear is required. These Should be available to borrow at the event, but to be certain you're covered they can be purchased at places such as Home Depot for a few dollars. If you wear normal glasses you may need the "over-the-glasses" (OTG) version.

  • Don't know which team to root for? Consider a Sun-related team! See Who's on FIRST for a list of Sun people involved with FIRST teams.
