If I create a folder from my IMAP client, the folder can contain both messages and sub-folders, but if I import messages to x/mbox using imsimport, then parent folder "x" is created as a sub-folder-only – it cannot contain messages.

But the answer is that Messaging Server really does not have the sort of distinction you describe. In Messaging Server, folders can contain messages and subfolders. What you are seeing is that you can create folder x/y without folder x actually existing. Messaging Server will create the appropriate structure to maintain the name, but there is no folder x. So to solve your problem, just create folder x either with any IMAP client or mboxutil -c.
