PCIe, PCI-X Card Support With Sun Blade Modular Systems

Magma has developed a 3rd party ExpressModule for the Sun Blade Modular Systems. This ExpressModule passes PCIe signals from the blade, through the midplane and out of the chassis. This signal is routed to external expansion boxes (also developed by Magma). In the expansion box, any PCIe or PCI-X card can be placed. The cards can range from X4 through X16, in both Full Height and Half Height form factors.

Use Cases

  • Visualisation (Media)
  • Telecom
  • Business Intelligence / Data Warehousing
  • Server Clustering
  • Legacy I/O Support On Blade Platforms

Supported Sun Platforms

  • Sun Blade 6000 Modular System
  • Sun Blade 6048 Modular System
  • Sun Blade 8000 Modular System
  • All x64 and CMT blades

HPC Visualisation Sizing Guide (Can also be used for Media Post-Production Applications)

Intel based solution AMD based solution
  • Sun Blade 6048 Modular System (1 Unit)
  • Intel Xeon based Sun Blade X6250 Server Module (24-28 Units)
  • Magma PCIe Expander ExpressModule (1 Unit per Blade)
  • Sun Blade 6048 Modular System (1 Unit)
  • AMD Opteron based Sun Blade X6220 Server Module (24-48 Units)
  • Magma PCIe Expander ExpressModule (1 Unit per Blade)

Server Clustering

Requires any Sun Blade chassis. At least 1 blade inside the chassis should have a PCIe Expander ExpressModule. Customers will then connect ["daisy-chain"] multiple chassis & rackmounts using PCIe cables.
