Unfortunately, Best Practices like this one (shutdown all Non-Global Zones before doing a Live Upgrade) is exactly counter to the purpose of Live Upgrade. This is especially true in environments where there are many Non-Global Zones per server.
A much better recommendation would be to carefully coordinate all Live Upgrade operations with administrators on all Zones, insuring that there is a window to perform the Live Upgrade operation where no other system changes will be occurring. Normal operation of the Non-Global Zones can then continue during the Live Upgrade and the promise of patching and upgrading with an outage of only a single reboot can be realized.

That's the trick. We do include a note on this in the guide (System Administration Guide: Solaris Containers--Resource Management and Solaris Zones). I will add to the article here and check whether other locations, such as the guide, need clarification.
